Middle School Students in sixth grade should understand and explain information presented in different formats and media such as visual, oral, numeric, charts, or graphs and explain how this information helps them understand a topic, text, or issue. High School Students in 11th and 12th grades should understand and explain multiple sources of information presented in different formats and media such as visual, oral, numeric, charts, or graphs to make informed decisions and solve problems, evaluating the credibility and accuracy of each source and noting any discrepancies in the data. English Language Learners Explain and point out specific examples of how authors use various formats and media such as visual, oral, numeric, charts, or graphs to help readers understand the information presented in a passage. Students with Disabilities To help students understand key information in the lesson, list three to seven statements related to the content of the lesson you are presenting. Prompt students to agree or disagree with the statements. After the lesson, ask students to share their statements in small groups or with a peer and change their responses based on what they learned. Mathematics Elementary School First grade students should solve word problems with equations involving one unknown quantity. For example, students should be able to find the unknown number in each of the following equations: 8 +? = 11 5 =? – 3 6 + 6 =? Middle School Sixth grade students should learn to write, read, and evaluate algebraic formulas in which letters stand for numbers. For example, write the calculations: Subtract x from 8 as 8 – x. High School High school students should learn how to solve linear equations and inequalities in one variable, including equations with coefficients represented by letters. For example, when solving the inequality 4x – 2 ≥ -10, the 4 would be the coefficient. English Language Learners Provide specific examples of the expressions and vocabulary related to math, such as word problems, equations, quantity, expressions, linear equations, variables, and coefficients. Students with Disabilities Students with disabilities who are not yet fluent with basic math calculations should be allowed to use a calculator when solving for unknown variables.
