<P class=MsoNormal>Provide students in grades 6-8 opportunities to analyze how a key individual, event, or idea is introduced, illustrated, and elaborated on in a text.</P>

<P class=MsoNormal>Provide students in grades 9-10 with opportunities to analyze how the author unfolds an analysis or series of ideas or events, including the order in which the points are made, how they are introduced and developed, and the connections that are drawn between them.</P>

Teachers should provide a variety of opportunities for students to practice literacy skills in practical contexts and a range of real-life activities, like filling out a job application or developing a personal résumé.</SPAN></P>

<P class=MsoNormal>Teachers should provide students with tools, such as graphic organizers, to help them make connections and analyze how key individuals, events, or ideas are introduced, illustrated, and elaborated on in texts. There are different graphic organizers for various tasks you can find easily on the Internet. <U></U></P>

<P class=MsoNoSpacing>Students in grade 5 should be able to graph points on the coordinate and understand the x-coordinate as the distance to move right from the origin, and the y-coordinate as the distance to move up from the x-axis. <I>Note that a coordinate plane is formed by the intersection of a horizontal number line (x-axis) with a vertical number line (y-axis), intersecting at a point called the origin (0, 0).</I></P>

<P class=MsoNoSpacing><B>Middle School</B></P>
<P class=MsoNoSpacing>Students in grade 6 should be able to draw polygons <I>(a shape with 3 or more sides)</I> in the coordinate plane given coordinates for the vertices <I>(the corner or point where lines meet).</I> For example, plot the points (2,6); (4,2); (4,6); (2,2) then draw the polygon they create.</P>

<P class=MsoNoSpacing><B>High School</B></P>
<P class=MsoNoSpacing>Students in grades 9-12 should be able to use coordinates to prove simple geometric theorems <I>(statements that have been proven from other formulas)</I>. For example, prove or disprove that a figure defined by four given points in the coordinate plane is a rectangle. </P>
<P style="MARGIN-BOTTOM: 10pt" class=MsoNormal><SPAN style="COLOR: black"> <B></B></SPAN></P>
<P class=MsoNormal><B>English Language Learners</B></P>
<P class=MsoNormal><SPAN style="COLOR: black">Teachers should present a multi-stepped problem to the class and ask students to identify the steps they would need to take to solve the problem. Having students identify the steps will help them practice their language skills by reading and interpreting problems. This type of exercise will help students practice language skills as they are learning math.</SPAN></P>

<P class=MsoNormal><B>Students with Disabilities</B></P>
<P class=MsoNormal>Teachers should teach the sequential steps involved in solving specific types of problems. Provide the students with the step-by-step procedures they need to follow when solving a problem like those represented on a coordinate plane (for example, <I>first</I> find X by moving to the left or right, <I>next</I> find Y by moving up or down, <I>then</I> draw a dot at the intersection where they meet). Model each step leading to the completed problem for the student. <B></B></P>
